John Dingell is Longest-Serving US Congressman

Democrat John Dingell is the longest-serving member of Congress in U.S. history, celebrating 20,997 days on the job Friday.

The 86-year-old Michigan legislator passed the previous milestone set by the late Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia.

Dingell's career on Capitol Hill started in December of 1955, nearly six years before President Barack Obama was born. Dingell was elected to replace his father, who had died.

Congressional leaders will hold a ceremony in his honor at the U.S. Capitol next week.
