U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has met in Boston, Massachusetts, with his counterparts from Canada and Mexico for talks that covered subjects that included trade cooperation and the fight against extremism.
Kerry, Mexican Foreign Secretary Jose Antonio Meade and Canadian Foreign Minister John Baird met Friday and Saturday.
Kerry said they discussed efforts currently underway to defeat violent extremism and the battle against Islamic State. He said the three countries were working together to build a safe, sustainable and prosperous Western Hemisphere and that they shared a commitment to democratic values and human rights.
They discussed their countries' shared responsibility for a clean-energy future and the Trans-Pacific Partnership, which Kerry said would connect one-third of global trade. Kerry also noted that every day the United States does more than $3 billion in trade with its North American partners.
The three men also discussed Cuba. Kerry said Cuba would participate in the Summit of the Americas in April and that he looked forward to working with Mexico and Canada to advance human rights in the Communist nation.
