Militants Attack US Base in Afghanistan

Officials in eastern Afghanistan say suicide bombers have attacked a U.S. base near the Pakistani border.

Authorities say the insurgents struck the base Monday morning in Torkham, resulting in explosions and a gunbattle.

There are no immediate reports on casualties.

The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The Taliban has escalated its attacks in recent weeks, a surge that comes as U.S.-led foreign troops reduce their presence in Afghanistan ahead of a full withdrawal by the end of next year.
