New Protests in Indian Kashmir

TEXT SIZE - +

Thousands of people have taken to the streets in Indian-controlled Kashmir, after a teenage boy died from injuries sustained during a protest earlier this week.

Witnesses said the teenage boy died Wednesday in a hospital in Kashmir's main town of Srinagar, after being beaten Monday by paramilitary forces during a protest against Indian rule.

Police and paramilitary forces clashed with curfew-defying crowds following his death, with protesters chanting anti-government slogans.

Meanwhile in Pampore, just south of Srinagar, security forces opened fire to quell another demonstration, wounding one young protester.

At least 64 people have been killed in Kashmir during protests over the last two months, many after security forces opened fire to disperse crowds. Each new death fuels more protests in what Indian authorities have called a "cycle of violence."

The Himalayan region is divided between predominately-Hindu India and Muslim-majority Pakistan.  Muslims in Kashmir have been waging a decades-long struggle for independence from India or a merger with Pakistan.
