U.S. President Barack Obama says the country is "moving forward" four years after the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.

The president said in his weekly address Saturday the unemployment rate is now at its lowest level since he took office in early 2009.

He called on Republicans in Congress to keep the country moving forward with his plan to not raise taxes on 98 percent of Americans, instead of holding those cuts "hostage" until tax cuts are passed for the wealthiest 2 percent of Americans.

President Obama also urged the Republican senators who voted against his veterans job bill to reconsider their vote.  Obama said someone who fights abroad should not have to fight for a job after returning home.

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus Saturday said in his party's address the president's plan to fix the economy is to repeat the same "failed policies that have buried the middle class" the past four years.

Priebus said a new direction is needed in the country because "we can't afford four more years like the last four."
