A Pakistani prisoner who was attacked in an Indian jail last week has died.

Indian officials say Sanaullah Ranjay died in a hospital early Thursday.

Ranjay, a convicted murderer, suffered massive head injuries in a prison in the northern city of Jammu. His assault was apparently a revenge attack, following the death of an Indian prisoner, Sarabjit Singh, who was beaten with bricks by his fellow prisoners in a Pakistani jail.

Singh died of serious head injuries in a hospital in Lahore, days after his attack. He had been sentenced to death for spying and his role in bomb attacks that killed 14 people in Pakistan. His death caused furious protests in India.

India and Pakistan have fought three wars since the partition of British-ruled India in 1947. They have begun a peace process, but remain deeply suspicious of each other.
