Protesters Rally in Streets of Southern Oman Demanding Reform

Demonstrators gathered in the southern Omani city of Salalah on Friday, demanding reforms.

Western media reported that protesters held Friday prayers in a square near government headquarters and then staged a march along main streets.

Reformists are demanding government accountability and better wages. The main square in Salalah has been the scene of a sit-in for several weeks.

Most of the recent protests in the country have been peaceful. But in a crackdown in the northern city of Sohar on March 29, two demonstrators were killed in clashes between security forces and protesters.

Oman's Sultan Qaboos has responded to protests with reform measures including a cabinet reshuffle and the creation of 50,000 jobs.
