Rogue Afghan Soldier Kills 2 US Trainers, Afghan Recruit

TEXT SIZE - +

NATO says an Afghan soldier shot and killed two U.S. civilian trainers and one Afghan recruit at a training facility in northern Afghanistan.

In a statement Tuesday, NATO says soldiers were going through a routine weapons training course at a facility near Mazar-e-Sharif when the attack took place.  NATO says the shooter is believed to be an Afghan army trainer who was assigned to the Camp Shaheen army base there.

NATO says the suspect was killed in the shooting, but did not disclose any further details.  A NATO and Afghan soldier also were wounded.

Afghan Ministry of Defense spokesman General Zahir Azimi says a joint Afghan-NATO investigation has been launched into the incident.

The attack comes a week after a similar incident in which three British troops were killed by an Afghan soldier in southern Helmand province.  The soldier fled after the attack. Afghan forces have been working closely with their international counterparts as they seek to assume primary responsibility for security in Afghanistan.

In other violence, NATO says two service members were killed Tuesday in separate roadside bomb attacks in southern Afghanistan.

Coalition forces also killed and captured several suspected Taliban insurgents and commanders in overnight raids in the provinces of Nangarhar, Zabul, Paktika, Kunar and Kunduz, as well as Kandahar city.
