Saudi Protesters Demand Release of Prisoners

TEXT SIZE - +

Dozens of protesters gathered Sunday outside Saudi Arabia's Interior Ministry in Riyadh, demanding the release of prisoners who they say are being held without trial on terrorism charges.

The demonstrators were seeking a meeting with the country's interior minister, Prince Mohammed bin Nayef, but the request was denied.

Protests are banned in Saudi Arabia, where authorities are determined to prevent the unrest that is affecting neighboring countries, particularly Bahrain, from spreading there.

On Friday, a massive show of force by Saudi police blocked what activists had billed as a "Day of Rage" rally in Riyadh, the capital, called to demand democratic reforms in the oil-rich kingdom.
