Two former U.S. National Football League (NFL) players head a number of notable former professional athletes who ran for office during Tuesday's elections in the United States.

Republican Jon Runyan, a former offensive lineman for the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles, won a seat in the House of Representatives in New Jersey's 3rd District.

Former Washington Redskins quarterback Heath Shuler earned re-election to the House of Representatives from North Carolina in an important victory for the Democrats.

Republican Chris Dudley, a former National Basketball Association (NBA) center, is in a tight race with Democrat John Kitzhaber for Governor of Oregon that has yet to be decided (as of 3 p.m. Wednesday).

Shawn Bradley, a center for the NBA's Dallas Mavericks for nine years, fell short in a Republican bid for a seat in the Utah state legislature. Joining him on the losing side was Republican and former NFL wide receiver Damon Dunn, who was running for California's Secretary of State.
