S. Korea to Provide Humanitarian Help in Fight Against Islamic State

South Korea says it will contribute humanitarian assistance to the United States-led fight against the militant group Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.

The South Korean presidential office announced Tuesday that National Security Office Director Kim Kwan-jin outlined Seoul's plans in a meeting with his American counterpart in Washington this week.

According to the South Korean press release, U.S. National Security Advisor Susan Rice Monday stressed the need for South Korea and other allies to provide active support for efforts to defeat the Islamic State and tackle the Ebola virus outbreak in West Africa.

In recent weeks, Washington has been trying to garner international support for its fight against the extremist group.

The three-day visit is Kim’s first overseas trip since assuming the office as South Korea's top security official in June.
