South Korean Official Foresees North's Collapse
TEXT SIZE - +

A senior South Korean official says North Korea could bring about its own collapse if it keeps pouring scarce resources into its nuclear program and military.

Presidential security adviser Chun Yung-woo says in an interview with U.S. public broadcaster PBS that the "obsession" of North Korean leaders with weapons of mass destruction may become "a short-cut to their demise."

Chun said he sees North Korea's recent aggressive behavior followed by peace overtures as an indication of Pyongyang's desperation over an economic crisis that is getting worse daily.

When asked to predict how long the Stalinist regime could sustain its existence under current policies, Chun said the energy for change in the North was reaching critical mass, but he could not say when the collapse could come.
