Taliban Says US Should Pull Out of Afghanistan

TEXT SIZE - +

The Taliban is using the anniversary of the September 11 attacks to say the United States should withdraw from Afghanistan, adding that the U.S. has lost any chance to establish peace.

A statement issued Saturday criticized what the Taliban called America's "wrong policy" and warned the U.S. war effort is putting Americans in danger, both in the United States and around the world.

The Taliban message, signed by the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, also said the illegal U.S. occupation of Afghanistan had been defeated, and said the only option left for U.S. officials is to pull all American troops out of the country.

The U.S. sent forces into Afghanistan shortly after the September 11 attacks to hunt down those responsible, including al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden.

On Friday, U.S. President Barack Obama affirmed the U.S. commitment to training Afghan security forces to reduce the level of violence.

Meanwhile, Afghan President Hamid Karzai has been urging the Taliban to end its insurgency and join peace talks with the government.
