Teen Sailor Describes Her Sailing Troubles as 'Crazy'

TEXT SIZE - +

A U.S. teenage sailor rescued from her crippled sailboat Saturday describes her three days adrift in the Indian Ocean as "crazy."

Abby Sunderland, 16, said she is trying to get over the fact that she will never again see her vessel, Wild Eyes. Sunderland posted a blog from aboard a French fishing vessel that picked her up.

Meanwhile Sunderland's father, Laurence, told reporters in California Saturday that she will probably be transferred to a larger vessel soon that will take her to an island near Mauritius.  He said it may take a couple of weeks before he will be able to pick her up there.

Huge waves broke the mast on her sailboat Thursday, leaving her stranded in heavy seas.  She sent a distress signal and a plane dispatched by Australia located her boat Saturday.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority reported that a boat launched from the French fishing vessel Ile de la Reunion had picked up Sunderland late Saturday.

The teenage sailor left Los Angeles in January in an attempt to become the youngest sailor to sail around the world nonstop.  But her hopes were dashed when she was forced to dock in Cape Town, South Africa for repairs to her vessel.   Following the repairs she continued on the trip.

Some information for this report was provided by AP and AFP.
