Train Derails Near Paris, Killing Passengers

At least seven people are believed dead in France after a train carrying hundreds of passengers derailed at a station south of Paris.

The train veered off track Friday and crashed into the platform at Bretigny-sur-Orge station, about 20 kilometers south of the French capital. It had been traveling from Paris to the city of Limoges.

Dozens of people were reported injured in the crash, which caused some of the train's cars to topple over. Many passengers were believed to be trapped inside the wrecked cars. Interior Minister Manuel Valls warned the casualty toll is constantly evolving and could rise.

Friday's accident occurred as many families were traveling for summer vacations. This is a holiday weekend for France, which celebrates its most important national holiday -- Bastille Day -- on Sunday.

An investigation into the cause of the accident is under way. The head of the SNCF national railway told reporters the train's third and fourth carriages derailed first, knocking other cars off the track. The train was not scheduled to stop at the Bretigny-sur-Orge station
