It has been one year since U.S. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was shot in the head and nearly killed during a public rally in Tucson, Arizona.

On Sunday, Giffords is expected to attend at least one of several events being held in the southwestern United States city to mark the anniversary of the shooting.

In the year since the attack, the 41-year-old Democratic congresswoman has made a remarkable recovery, enabling her to return to Congress in August to cast a vote on legislation raising the federal government's debt ceiling.

The man charged in the shooting, Jared Loughner, in which six people died, has pleaded not guilty. He has reportedly been diagnosed with schizophrenia and has been in jail since the crime.

Among those killed were a federal judge, a member of Gifford's staff and a nine-year-old girl. Besides Giffords, a dozen other people were wounded.

Giffords has not yet said whether she will run for re-election in November.
