Naheed Sahar

Naheed Sahar

As a poet and writer, Naheed Sahar mainly does literary programs for Deewa radio. She has interviewed some of the most prominent contemporary Pashto poets, writers and singers, and introduced a number of poets who had not been much heard about previously. Before joining Deewa and moving to the United States, Sahar ran a school in her native village in northwestern Pakistan.

She has a Masters Degree in Pashto literature from the University of Peshawar. She has two books on poetry_one on Pashto Haiku, a Japanese poetic genre. It earned her the title “malka-e-haiku” or the queen of haiku from her friends in literary circles. She had been a columnist with the Pashto daily and has done programs on women issues for Radio Pakistan.

Like almost all Pashtuns, she has fond memories of her mountain village, her ancient culture and traditions.

She misses them all and some of her poems revolve around those themes. She has traveled extensively across Pakistan, America, Canada, Germany, Britain, Saudi Arabia and Dubai. She loves to cook and eat in her spare time.

She can cook almost all traditional Pashtun dishes but is an expert in cooking the traditional delicacy of “ghati wrezi” or rice cooked in beef and species.
