Ashfaq Mohmand
Ashfaq is a broadcaster for Voice of America's new program, VOA Deewa Radio, where he writes, reports and presents important news headlines and stories for the Pashto community, the region and the world. He enjoys participating in this unique opportunity to build a new radio network for the Pashto community from scratch. Ashfaq enjoys producing and reporting on issues that affect the ordinary, day-to-day life of the listener as a service to make a lasting impact on the public at large.
Before coming to VOA headquarters in Washington, DC, Ashfaq worked as print and TV journalist for major news outlets in Pakistan. His previous radio experience includes Radio Pakistan - Peshawar where he worked as a producer for the current affairs program "Hendara" (Mirror) which often dealt with sensitive topics such as repatriation of afghan refugees, drug addiction and child labor. Ashfaq also worked for Khyber TV, a Pashto language satellite-based channel as a reporter and producer for the news/current affairs program " Olas Ghag" (People's Voice). He was also the main news anchor for the popular sports program, Sports World, where he also produced packages and wrote scripts.
One of the most challenging moments in his career occurred during the tremendous earthquake (6.7 magnitude) that struck Pakistan in October 2005 killing approximately 100,000 people and leaving thousands homeless and injured. At the time, Ashfaq was reporting live from collapsed and damaged sections of Islamabad. He also visited effected areas of Kashmir and conducted interviews with displaced, injured victims.
Some of his other career highlights include interviews with notable sports stars, like former world squash champion, Qamar Zaman, Pakistan national squash coach, Ayaz Khan, former Pakistan cricket star and now famous politician, Imran Khan, Pakistan national cricket team vice-captain, Younis Khan, and body building champion, Mr. "South Asia" Ijaz Hussain.
Ashfaq is originally from the small village of Chitral in Mardan, famous for its historic ruins. He completed his masters in journalism and mass communication from the University of Peshawar. In his spare time, he enjoys watching and playing cricket and reading about history. It's also reported that he is an excellent, though modest, cook. His favorite specialties to prepare are beef tikka. Ahsfaq enjoys living in the US and considers it a nice, peaceful place with friendly people. He also thrives off the metropolitan, productive energy here, describing it as a "place for busy people who love their work too much." But Ashfaq also misses his home, especially the joint family system where the love of his mother, sisters and brothers all join together collectively to form a loving, communal environment.
