Muhammad Ikram
Ikram was well on his way toward a respectable career in law and politics before being seduced by the glamour of media and switched his major in graduate school. He is now a broadcaster for Voice of America’s Pashto language news and entertainment program, VOA Deewa Radio. Based in Washington, DC, Ikram is an integral part of the VOA Deewa team and contributes to news, call-in and feature programs on a daily basis.
Ikram made his debut in the field of journalism with Pakistan’s leading daily English newspaper, “The News International” in the Peshawar bureau where he worked as sub-editor as well as reporter and covered education, social and political issues. Hailing from the fertile land of Charsadda, Ikram shed light on the leading local issues, particularly regarding land disputes between landlords and tenants. Ikram later joined “News Network International” (NN) and started working in Pakistan's capital, Islamabad. It was a golden opportunity for him to earn a name by writing on major issues of the day in the capital.
Ikram also served as a special reporter for the Supreme Court of Pakistan and the Ministry of Law, Justice and Human Rights Commission of Pakistan where he covered landmark legal cases in including constitutional petitions challenging the 17th amendment, the Hisba Bill and honor killings, including coverage of human rights advocate, Mukhtara Mai. He also wrote on human rights, social and political issues in Pakistan. He also covered the Foreign Office of Pakistan including joint press conferences and briefings by foreign dignitaries and collaborated with foreign media in devastated earthquake affected areas that struck the northern parts of Pakistan killing more than 80,000 thousand and left millions homeless.
Ikram earned his Masters in Journalism and Mass Communication from the University of Peshawar and enjoys living in the U.S.
