Mahwash Jaleel
Mahwash works for Voice of America's new Pashto broadcast VOA Deewa Radio, which airs 24 hours a day, seven-days-a week on FM 100.5 mHz. Born in Peshawar, Mahwash has traveled across Pakistan and Kashmir and now comes to the U.S. with lots of expectations to establish a career in international affairs in Washington, a major world news center, and to learn about American culture first-hand. Mahwash says traveling provides perspective, gives insight and widens one's horizons.
Mahwash began her career in print journalism with the daily newspaper, Dawn, and wrote reports and stories on various social issues, and had the opportunity to attend workshops including one on gender reform. Mahwash also worked for the University of Peshawar campus radio station FM 107 as producer, newsreader, DJ and talk show host. Mahwash earned her masters degree in journalism and mass communication from the University of Peshawar with distinction, obtaining First Class and earning a gold medal. During her masters program she was also the general secretary of the Khyber Literary Club and earned many certificates and awards for speech and other such events.
Mahwash has great love for music, especially Ghazal, Pashto and Urdu film songs and also a deep interest in classical Urdu literature, biographies, glass painting and traveling. Voted “Lady of the Evening” in university, Mahwash is now eager to charm America and the Pashto community at large.
