Triple-jump world record holder Jonathan Edwards of Britain has been appointed to the Organizing Committee of the 2012 London Olympics.

The British Athletics Commission selected the 2000 Olympic champion after he played an important role in London's successful bid for the 2012 Games. The retired Edwards will represent track and field athletes on the committee.

London 2012 chairman Lord Coe said Edwards eloquently represented the views of the Athletes Advisory Committee, and added that he believes the ex-triple-jumper will continue to represent their views energetically.

Edwards' appointment comes the day after the International Olympic Committee named Swiss lawyer Denis Oswald as head of the coordination commission, a 15-member team overseeing preparations for the 2012 Games.
