Iran's president says his government will soon offer new proposals aimed at resolving the international standoff over Tehran's nuclear program.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad told reporters Wednesday that Iran's National Security Council will draw up the proposals and make them public.

He indicated Iran wants to continue talks about its nuclear program with Britain, Germany, and France. On Tuesday, the European powers canceled a meeting with Iranian officials scheduled for August 31.

France says the meeting was canceled because Iran has resumed some sensitive nuclear work in violation of an agreement Tehran signed last year. However, France's foreign minister, Philippe Douste-Blazy, says he believes more talks with Iran are possible.

The Europeans are trying to persuade Iran to give up aspects of its nuclear program that could be diverted to weapons production.

Iran denies charges from the Bush administration that it secretly has been trying to develop nuclear weapons.
