George Bush

President Bush has conveyed his greetings to Jewish Americans as they begin observing Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.

Mr. Bush released a statement Friday, offering his best wishes for the occasion and the start of the Days of Awe, in which Jews reflect on the past year and welcome the year to come.

At the sound of the Shofar, a musical instrument blown like a trumpet, Jews around the world are called to gather to celebrate Rosh Hashanah.

Mr. Bush says the period is also a time to reflect on the history of the Jewish people, from the days of Abraham to the present.

The president says throughout America's history, Jewish Americans have strengthened and enriched the character of the nation.
