The U.S. State Department says it will send a high-level delegation to Liberia to observe upcoming presidential and congressional elections.
In a statement, spokesman Sean McCormack said Assistant Secretary for African Affairs Jendayi Frazer will lead the delegation.
Elections are scheduled for October 11, and the visit will last from October 10 to the 13.
Other delegates include Republican Senator Lincoln Chafee from the northeastern state of Rhode Island, Democratic Representative from the northeastern state of New Jersey Donald Payne, USAID Assistant Administrator Lloyd Pierson, U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Liberia Donald Booth, and the State Department's Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration Linda Greenfield-Thomas.
The State Department says Washington is committed to supporting democracy in Liberia.
The United States has provided $10 million in funding to organizations providing political training and voter education.
