Relief efforts are under way in southeast China to help hundreds of thousands of people after a rare earthquake on Saturday.

The official Xinhua news agency says the magnitude 5.7 quake was centered in Ruichang city in Jiangxi province, near the border with Hubei province.

The state news agency says more than 400,000 people in the area had left their homes, apparently fearing more earthquakes.

Teams of aid workers have been set up to help with medical needs, supplies and coordination of relief efforts.

Officials say the earthquake killed at least 14 people and injured hundreds.

Most of the dead were in and around the cities of Ruichang and Jiujiang in Jiangxi province, with at least one fatality in Wuxue, a city in neighboring Hubei.
