19 December 2005

Joe Sakic scored on a power-play goal and a penalty shot within a 19-second span to lead the Colorado Avalanche to a 2-1 win over the New York Rangers Sunday night in National Hockey League action.

Sakic was knocked down from behind by New York's Martin Straka after making his power play, leading to his penalty shot. He then squeezed a shot past goalie Kevin Weeks for the Avalanche's only scoring.

Goalie Roberto Luongo made a season-high 53 saves to help the Florida Panthers defeat the Washington Capitals, 3-2. The victory was the first road win for the Panthers in nearly two months (since October 25). The Capitals set a team record with 55 shots on goal.

And finally, brothers Rob and Scott Niedermayer each scored a goal to lead the Anaheim Mighty Ducks to a 5-4 triumph over the San Jose Sharks. The loss snapped the Sharks' six-game winning streak.
