Iraqi police, with U.S. troops, have captured at least 50 insurgents who stormed a police station south of Baghdad Wednesday.

Officials say gunmen, armed with rocket-propelled grenades and automatic rifles, carried out Wednesday's pre-dawn raid on a police station in Madain.

Iraqi police and American troops engaged the insurgents in a two-hour gunfight.  At least four policemen were killed.

Iraqi authorities said a Syrian national was among the captured insurgents.

The assault comes one day after insurgents stormed a jail in Muqdadiyah, north of Baghdad, freeing more than 30 prisoners. That raid has been claimed by the Mujaheddin Shura Council, a Sunni insurgent group.

In Baghdad Wednesday, gunmen attacked a truck carrying Shi'ite Muslim pilgrims returning from a religious holiday in Karbala, killing at least one.

Two Iraqi policemen patrolling in Baghdad were also gunned down. 

CBS Television said Wednesday that a detained Iraqi cameraman, Abdul Ameer Younis Hussein, for the American network suspected of collaborating with insurgents will go on trial within days. The Committee to Protect Journalists has called his treatment "alarming" because he has been held without charge for almost a year.
