US Military Says Soldiers Killed 12 Rebels in Iraq

26 April 2006

The U.S. military says 12 suspected militants and a woman have been killed in a U.S. raid on a house near Baghdad.

A military statement says U.S. soldiers killed five terrorists outside the house in Yusefiyah before calling for an air strike. Troops later searched the destroyed house and found the bodies of seven more terrorists and the woman.

The statement says each of the dead men wore magazine vests and carried two hand grenades.

In Baghdad, police Wednesday say they found four bodies with gunshot wounds to their heads and showing signs of torture.

To the south, police in Karbala said six bodies were found on the outskirts of the town. Authorities say all six had been tortured and shot.

Some information for this report was provided by AP and Reuters.
