Indonesian officials say reconstruction of the country's quake devastated central Java will cost more than $3 billion.

Indonesia's Development Minister, Paskah Suzetta, released the preliminary government estimate Tuesday.

A 6.3 magnitude quake near the end of May killed close to 6,000 people on the Indonesian island of Java.

Thirty-six thousand people were injured in the quake, which flattened buildings in and around the ancient city of Yogyakarta.

Many earthquake survivors are living in makeshift shelters, with no toilets or running water.

Indonesia is prone to earthquakes because it sits on the so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire" where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity.
