Israel carried out more airstrikes in the Gaza Strip Tuesday. This latest military action is part of Israel's offensive to secure the release of an abducted soldier and stop Palestinian rocket attacks.

Palestinian officials say strikes near the town of Beit Hanoun killed one man and wounded three others.  An Israeli warplane also destroyed a bridge in the area that Israel says militants used to transport rockets.

Israeli officials say more troops are ready to push deep into Gaza if necessary.  But Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh warned Israel against continuing the offensive. 

Haniyeh is a leader in the militant Islamist group Hamas. He wrote in the Washington Post newspaper Tuesday that Israel will have no peace if it refuses to allow the Palestinians to live in peace and dignity.
 
In other developments, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas met in Amman with Jordan's King Abdullah, who vowed to work to convince Israel to end its offensive.

More than 50 Palestinians have been killed in the Gaza Strip since Israeli military operations began two weeks ago (on June 28), following the Israeli soldier's kidnapping by Palestinian militants.

The exiled political leader of Hamas, Khaled Mashaal, said Monday that the captured soldier would only be released if Israel frees Palestinian prisoners it is holding.  Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has ruled out negotiations or any prisoner swap.
