Baseball: Bonds Signs 1-Year Contract with San Fransisco

08 December 2006

Sources say baseball slugger Barry Bonds will return to the San Francisco Giants under a one-year contract worth $16 million.

The deal requires Bonds to pass a physical and would bring the 42-year-old player back to the Giants for a 15th consecutive season. He sought contracts with other teams after his five-year, 90-million dollar deal with the Giants ended earlier this year. But few teams appeared to be interested in signing the slugger, who has been slowed by knee injuries and plagued by allegations of steroid use.

The seven-time National League Most Valuable Player has 734 home runs, just 22 away from passing retired great Hank Aaron on the all-time home run list.

Bonds has strong emotional ties to the Giants. His late father, Bobby, was a popular player for the franchise, as well as his godfather, the legendary Willie Mays.
