The deputy head of one of Pakistan's largest Islamic political parties says hundreds of supporters were arrested following a protest rally in Lahore on Sunday.

Syed Munawar Hasan of the Jamaat-e-Islami party said instead of staging mass arrests during the rally, police waited for party members to return home.

"They had already been informed that police were waiting for them," said Hasan. "So whenever they reached their house, even late in the night, they had been followed and arrested and put in different lock-ups."

In Karachi, witnesses said police beat a group of lawyers as they marched to the city's high court Monday morning. The country's chief justice and the head of one of the secular opposition parties were arrested Saturday and Sunday, as President Pervez Musharraf's emergency decree went into effect.
