Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak have held their first direct conversation, in a telephone call about regional issues Tuesday.
The leaders spoke about the current crisis in the Gaza strip and the political crisis in Lebanon during the call, which was initiated by Iran's president.
Iran cut diplomatic ties with Egypt in 1979, after Cairo signed a peace agreement with Israel and provided asylum for the deposed shah of Iran.
Iran has repeatedly offered to restore ties - a move Egypt has said it is considering.
