A roadside bomb in Afghanistan hit a convoy carrying the governor of southern Kandahar province Sunday, killing three policemen and wounding two others.

Officials say governor Asadullah Khalid, who escaped unhurt, was returning from a meeting with elders on poppy eradication efforts when the attack occurred.

No one has claimed responsibility for the blast.

On Saturday, a military operation against the Taliban in neighboring Helmand province left two civilians and several insurgents dead.

Coalition forces say they were looking for a Taliban leader when they came under fire. The two civilians, a woman and a child, were in a compound where the militants were hiding.

Meanwhile, a top U.S. general says insurgent attacks in eastern Afghanistan are down 35 percent compared with the same period a year ago.

Brigadier-General Joseph Votel told reporters Sunday this is due to what he called "aggressive military operations" by Afghan and coalition forces, and improved Afghan governance.

Also Sunday, Denmark lost its 10th soldier serving in Afghanistan. A military statement says the Danish soldier died in an accident while preparing for a night exercise in Helmand.
