Canadian soldiers with NATO-led force inspect site of suicide attack in Kandahar, 12 Mar 2008

A suicide car bomber killed at least one civilian in an attack on a Canadian military convoy in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar Wednesday.

The attack destroyed a vehicle in the NATO-led convoy.  At least two people were wounded, including a soldier.

Taliban militants claimed responsibility.

Also today, a roadside bomb wounded three Romanian soldiers who were on patrol near Kandahar.

In the western province of Herat, police say seven insurgents destroyed a telecommunications tower in Obe district overnight.

It is the sixth such attack since last month, when the Taliban warned mobile phone companies they would blow up the towers if they were not turned off at night.

Militants say Afghan and NATO soldiers use the phone towers to identify Taliban hideouts.

It is not clear if the militants who attacked the tower Tuesday night are members of the Taliban.

In other news, Canadian military officials announced that a Canadian soldier died Tuesday in Afghanistan in a non-combat incident.  No other details were given.

Eighty Canadian military personnel have been killed in Afghanistan since joining the NATO force in 2002.
