Police in the southern Afghan province of Helmand say a bomb exploded at a power station building Saturday, killing two people and wounding eight others.

The provincial police chief says both of those killed and six of the wounded were employees of the station.

The French news agency, AFP, says the insurgent Taliban movement is claiming it planted the bomb in an attempt to kill the district police chief, who regularly held meetings in the building.

On Wednesday, a car bomb killed eight civilians and wounded 17 others in a crowded market in the province.  The provincial police chief said there were no security forces in the area, and that civilians were the target of the attack.  He blamed Taliban militants for the attack.

Afghan, NATO and U.S. troops are fighting a resurgent Taliban and other rebels who have strongholds in the southern and eastern parts of the country.  At least six thousand people were killed in attacks last year, the deadliest in Afghanistan since the Taliban was ousted from power by a U.S.-led invasion in late 2001.
