Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki and new Prime Minister Raila Odinga have urged ethnic reconciliation during a tour of the region hit hardest in deadly post-election violence.

The two leaders began their three-day tour Thursday of the western Rift Valley province. The visit takes place as lawmakers argue about what to do with internally displaced people, most of whom live in the region.

Mr. Kibaki and Mr. Odinga told a crowd in the town of Eldoret that they are seeking a solution to the problem of displacement.

Some members of parliament have urged the government to hold off on plans to resettle internal refugees until the root cause of the post-election violence is addressed.

The initial wave of violence in the Rift Valley involved different ethnic groups fighting over land rights following December's elections, which odinga accused President Kibaki of stealing.

According to the Kenyan Red Cross, 160,000 people remain in camps.

Mr. Kibaki and Mr. Odinga are hoping to determine a plan for resettling these people by next week.
