Zimbabwean state media say the country's ruling and opposition parties have each filed legal challenges to some of the results from the March 29 parliamentary election.

The Herald newspaper says President Robert Mugabe's ZANU-PF party is challenging the outcome of 53 of the 210 seats, after official results showed the party lost its parliamentary majority.

The paper says the opposition Movement for Democratic Change is disputing the outcome of 52 seats. It says the MDC alleges the ruling party bought votes and interfered with the voting process.

Also Wednesday, the African Union urged Zimbabwe's political leaders to shun violence in the build-up to a separate presidential runoff vote. AU leaders issued the statement after holding talks to discuss Zimbabwe's post-election crisis.

The MDC says its leader, Morgan Tsvangirai, won outright against President Mugabe in the March presidential election. Zimbabwe's election commission says Mr. Tsvangirai won more votes but not enough to avoid a runoff.

Election officials say they will meet soon to set a date for a second presidential election.
