Afghan officials say police have killed six Taliban insurgents, including a militant-appointed provincial governor, during a clash in western Afghanistan.

The interior ministry says the fighting erupted Thursday in the western province of Ghor.  A ministry statement says a militant police chief and a Taliban-appointed governor of Ghor were among those killed in the clash.

A police official says at least two police officers and a civilian were wounded in the fighting.

Afghan, NATO and U.S. troops are fighting a resurgent Taliban and other rebels who have strongholds in the southern and eastern parts of the country. 

In some areas, the Taliban have appointed and run their own parallel administration.
