The attorney general for the northeastern state of New York, Andrew Cuomo, says Verizon, Sprint and Time Warner have agreed to block connections to child porn newsgroups and Web sites nationwide.

The companies will also pay $1.1 million to help eliminate child porn that users created and disseminated on their servers.

The move follows an eight-month investigation that uncovered 88 sites devoted to child pornography and more than 11,000 lewd photos of children.

Verizon and Time Warner are two of the nation's largest internet service providers, together serving about 16 million customers. Sprint is one of the nation's largest wireless companies.
