In February 2007, rebels in Niger renewed violence against the government over what they claim is the economic marginalization of the native Tuareg people. The conflict is based in the vast desert region in the northern part of the country. Niger is already one of the world’s poorest countries, and suffers from regular droughts and food shortages. The clash between the rebels and government forces is seriously affecting tens of thousands of people already living under extremely difficult conditions.
VOA has a special report page featuring reports and background – the rebels, the issues, and the effects. Another unique feature of the page is an exclusive video series and slideshow of original photos by VOA reporter Phuong Tran, who traveled to the Saharan region of Niger to take a look at the Tuareg people and the issues facing the region.
