John Lennon oversees programming for VOA's 45 language services, facilitating the ongoing development of a vibrant multi-media organization.
Lennon was appointed Associate Director for Language Programming in January 2008. Prior to this role, he had served as Director of the Office of Performance Review since 2000, and for extended periods as Acting Associate Director for Program Support in the International Broadcasting Bureau (IBB). During that time, Lennon expanded the use of audience research and market analysis in the development of programming initiatives and helped establish the Office of Marketing and Program Placement.
Lennon came to work at VOA in 1968 after working in radio and television in Washington D.C. His early VOA career included assignments as a radio producer, writer, reporter, and editor. He has been Deputy Director of the Latin American and European Divisions, Director of the South European Division, and Acting Director of WORLDNET Television, the precursor to VOA TV. He served at the National Security Council in 1994-95 as a Director in the Office of Democracy.
Lennon has a BA in Communication from The American University, and an MA in Journalism from the University of Maryland.
