The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) says it is concerned that Zimbabwean authorities have repeatedly visited the offices of three foreign journalists in the past two days.
The three are identified as Angus Shaw of the Associated Press and Jan Raath and Brian Latham, who both work for British and South African news organizations.
A lawyer for the journalists, Beatrice Mtetwa, says she was told Zimbabwean police are investigating espionage allegations and whether a satellite phone used by one of the reporters was licensed.
The alleged investigation of the reporters comes ahead of Zimbabwe's March 31st parliamentary election.
CPJ executive director Ann Cooper says her organization is disturbed at what she terms "this ominous development" and has called on the government to cease harassment of independent journalists.
