Iraqis walk through rubble left behind following US troops' overnight raid in Azamiyah neighborhood, 12 Jul 2007

Police and hospital officials in Iraq say clashes between U.S. troops and militants in a Shi'ite neighborhood of Baghdad have killed at least 13 people.

The Reuters news agency says two of its workers - an Iraqi photographer and a driver - were killed in the area as the clashes in the eastern Amin district were taking place. The news agency says the cause of the deaths is unclear.

In the central city of Diwaniya, the U.S. military says a U.S. air strike killed five militants who were planting a roadside bomb.

The military also announced that an American soldier was killed in an attack east of Baghdad. It gave no further details.

In other news, the U.S. military said coalition forces detained 19 suspected terrorists over the past two days in central and northern Iraq.

The military says the detainees include one who was described as "the most active terrorist cell leader" in the northern city of Mosul.

In a separate release, the military said coalition forces detained two people believed to be affiliated with the Mahdi army of radical Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr. The Mahdi army is blamed for a number of attacks on coalition forces in the area.
