Man in Florida surveys damage done to home following passage of hurricane

Residents of Florida have begun the all-too-familiar process of cleaning up from a major hurricane - this time, Hurricane Wilma.

The storm is blamed for at least six deaths in the southern U.S. state, and caused billions of dollars in property damage. More than three million homes and businesses in Florida are without electricity Tuesday.

Wilma was the eighth hurricane to hit Florida in the past 15 months, and the 22nd major storm of what has been a record-setting Atlantic hurricane season.

Before crossing Florida, the storm caused flooding in western Cuba and extensive damage on Mexico's Yucatan peninsula.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center says Wilma is growing weaker as it races up the U.S. East Coast but remains a powerful storm with winds near 185 kilometers per hour.

Forecasters say Wilma is triggering high waves and rain in some coastal areas, and may strike the Canadian province of Newfoundland on Wednesday.
