Pakistani Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz says he expects reconstruction efforts to cost close to $5 billion after last week's earthquake.
Speaking to reporters Saturday, Mr. Aziz quoted United Nations officials as saying it will take 10 years to rebuild Pakistan. But he insisted his country would be able to do so faster.
The prime minister spoke hours after Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf said the death toll from the quake will probably go beyond the 38,000 announced Saturday by his government. Another 1,400 people died in Indian Kashmir.
General Musharraf said there is only a slim chance of finding any more survivors, eight days after the 7.6 magnitude quake hit the region.
The disaster left more than two million people homeless.
