Zacarias Moussaoui listening to taped testimony of a 9/11 victim's family member

Jurors in the sentencing trial of convicted terrorist Zacarias Moussaoui have heard testimony from witnesses who survived the terrorist attack on the Pentagon on September 11, 2001.

During testimony Tuesday in Alexandria, Virginia, Army Lt. Colonel John Thurman and Navy Lt. Nancy McKeown told of how they fought through smoke and heat to escape the burning building after it was struck by American Airlines Flight 77.

Thurman told jurors he felt guilt about surviving when others died. McKeown recalled trying to find two men who worked for her as she sought to flee the building. The men died.

A Pentagon police sergeant, Jose Rojas, Jr. also told jurors of how he pulled victims from the building, minutes after the plane hit.

Additionally jurors saw photographs of charred remains of people killed at the Pentagon and heard distress calls to air traffic controllers from the cockpit of United Airlines Flight 93. The flight crashed into a Pennsylvania field after passengers attempted to retake it from hijackers.

On Wednesday, prosecutors intend to play a tape from Flight 93's cockpit voice recorder.

Last week, jurors agreed that Moussaoui was eligible to die for his role in the terrorist attacks. Defense lawyers are opposing the death penalty, saying he is mentally ill and had a limited role in the attacks. They say execution would fulfill his dream of being a martyr.
