Cambodia Begins Coronation Rituals

28 October 2004

Cambodia has begun three days of ceremonies centering on Friday's formal coronation of King Norodom Sihamoni.

The pageantry began Thursday, at Cambodia's royal palace, with King Sihamoni receiving visits from lawmakers, monks, diplomats and family members. Several Buddhist and Brahmin ceremonies also begin Thursday.

The 51-year-old will be officially crowned and seated on the throne late Friday, and will conclude the festivities by addressing the nation Saturday.

King Sihamoni is also expected to pardon a number of prisoners.

Cambodia's Throne Council chose King Sihamoni as the new monarch earlier this month. He replaces his father, Norodom Sihanouk, who abdicated for health reasons.
