The U.S. Army says 28 soldiers face possible charges in connection with the deaths of two Afghan prisoners in U.S. custody two years ago.

The Army said Thursday that investigators have finished their probe and given their report to commanders for possible action against the soldiers.

An Army statement says charges may include involuntary manslaughter, assault and dereliction of duty.

In September, the Army officially charged Sergeant James Boland with assault in connection to the deaths, which occurred at the Bagram airbase north of Kabul in December, 2002.

A military coroner determined that the two men - both Afghans in their 20's - died after receiving "blunt-force" injuries.

The U.S. military came under intense criticism earlier this year for allowing prisoner abuse at the Abu Ghraib facility in Iraq.
