Honduran President Calls For Strengthening OAS: Globalization 'A Reality'

23 October 2004

Washington, D.C., Oct. 22, 2004 - In an interview with the Voice of America, Honduran President Ricardo Maduro expressed support for strengthening the Organization of American States (OAS) as a fundamental organization for the Americas. "Today," he said, "globalization is not an alternative but a reality with which we must live."

President Maduro, who appeared today as a guest on VOA's Foro Interamericano (Inter-American Forum) Spanish language television program, said "a divided Latin America is worth little in size and magnitude at the world level," but through increased cooperation from OAS member countries, "united we can accomplish incredible feats."

Foro Interamericano is a weekly, hour-long Spanish public affairs program that examines issues of interest to the Americas. Hosted by Adriana Amat, the program features news segments and interviews with high-level policy makers, along with roundtable discussions with journalists who cover U.S./Latin American issues. VOA also broadcasts Desde Washington (From Washington), a five-minute, weekday Spanish-language television newscast for more than three-dozen affiliates in 10 countries throughout Latin America. VOA Spanish also broadcasts programs directly to listeners via shortwave and by satellite to AM and FM affiliates throughout Latin America. Programs are available on the Internet at www.VOANews.com/Spanish.

The Voice of America, which first went on the air in 1942, is a multimedia international broadcasting service funded by the U.S. government through the Broadcasting Board of Governors.
